Back in the Dark Ages, here in Melbourne milk used to be delivered to one's home by a horse and cart with human assistant, well before dawn. It came in glass bottles with a foil cap, and unhomogenized into the bargain. Here in the Yarra Valley (Ivanhoe) there was a lot of cream in it, from local Jersey herds. And sometimes you'd go out to bring it in and there would be a hole in the foil and quite a lot of the creamy-top missing. This happened to neighbours as well, and one watched through his venetian blinds early one morning. He saw a 'crow' walk up cautiously, peck the bottle-cap, and drink as far down as it could reach.
We all got boxes to protect the milk after that.
