My daughter is 7, and while birdwatching with dad was cool a while back,
it did wear off pretty quickly, so don't lash out.
However, before she decided it was not for her, she was using a cheapie
pair of (I think) 7x25s from the local pharmacy. They don't have a
great field of view, but Emma got very good at swinging them at what she
wanted pretty quickly. We also have an old pair of Zeiss Jena,
something like 7x42 I think, which are even for their age brilliant (and
would be my recommendation over the pharmacy folding pair), and didn't
cost more than $100 from a second hand place.

I wonder if annyone on the list has useful advice on good reasonably
priced bins suitable for a girl about to turn 8. My daughter (who
will be 8 in November) likes the idea of going birdwatching with me,
and while I suspect this is more social than ornothological,
obviously i would like to encourage her interest. But she woould need
bins; she has used mine a little, with some success, but they are
much much too heavy (I have a heavy pair of meades) ,and my backups
have too narrow a field of view.
I was thinking that the ideal pair would be light, with a big field
of view (to give her a decent chance of seeing the bird), and easy
to focus. Magnnification would be a lesser concern, as would optical
excellence (so long as they are OK optically). so I had in mind
something like 7x 35s or somethingg similar.
First: anyone with experience of this problem - is this list of
priorities about right? and if so (or even if not), any specific
recommendations? ( had in mind a price range of up to a couple of
hundred dollars; I hope that might get something OK)
any help apprciated.
