In response to Rohan Clarke's posting on Grass Owl records reported in
Victoria. There may have been some twitchable records in the past. I
have gleaned the following from the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife. Some of
these records have been sourced from old published reports where the
observers did not precisely indicate where they observed the bird.
Grass Owl
Records for Victoria - 11 (including the current Werribee one)
Dates
1884 (Geelong area)
1898 (Point Henry, Geelong area)
1860 - 1915 Black Hills near Portarlington
1919 Wangaratta area
1933 (Werribee area)
1949 Fishermans Bend (Melbourne)
1958 East Gippsland area
1960 East Gippsland area
1962 Wilsons Promontory (in Cooper 1975)
2002 Yambuk (far sw Victoria)
2006 Western Treatment Plant
As indicated in the Atlas of Victorian Birds (Emison et al. 1987, p. 165)
Grass Owl's are '...vagrants to Victoria', with no flocks of the species
ever (apparently) being recorded here.
Were there twitchers in Victoria in the 1950s and 1960s?
cheers, M
