Absolutely, Mike Simpson!!!! One of my first messages to this site was treated with scorn. So I have posted very fairly since. Have had a few glasses of plonk now so am feeling brave. ---- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Simpson" <> To: "'Edwin Vella'" <>; "'Birding-aus'" <>

Hi Edwin,

I also wonder how many rarities are actually seen but not reported because
reporting anything here unless you are one of the 'in crowd' will bring you
nothing but scorn?

A few years ago I reported a small flock of 10 Tree Sparrows here in Penrith
and got nothing but hate mail.
Yet, I am originally from England and am familiar with both Tree and House
Sparrows.
I reported that all 10 were males (forgetting that males/females are
identical in Tree Sparrows), someone should have noticed this, as I have
never seen 10 male House Sparrows at one time with no females, I consider
this a good point in favour of Trees.
This small flock landed on our clothes airer and chattered away for about 5
minutes while I checked them in my Pizzey and Knight and only flew away when
I took my camera to the door.

Maybe I am wrong and everyone else was correct, but the reaction this report
generated put me off reporting anything out of the ordinary until I reported
an Osprey over the Nepean. This brought forth similar comments until 5 other
members also reported seeing Ospreys in the area.

Regards, Mike Simpson
