Hi Keith and fellow Birding-Aus'ers,
Thanks for your mail below. While I appreciate your thoughts Keith, I
was up there yesterday and this bird is regularly seen around one of
three locations:
1. Opposite the silos foraging in a wet, grassy trench that runs
parallel to the road
2. Behind that grassy trench is a fenced off area with a service
track around the perimeter. If you follow that service track around
the back, there is a series of ponds that are either wet or semi-dried
mud and it goes there
3. In the field to the northern side of the Telstra tower.
Regardless of how often this bird is 'flushed' it seems to definitely
favour one of these three locations. Remember it was first seen on 19
June so it's been there for a while now.
Burren Junction is small with only a pub, school, post office and a a
scattering of houses. Navigating your way around town is easy and
finding each of these spots is also simple.
One of the distinguishing features of this bird is a very large
abscess like protrusion on one of its feet. This is particularly
noticeable when the bird flies and could be the reason that it is so
sedentary in Burren Junction. It was also mentioned that this could
eventually kill the bird but I don't know.
As previous reports suggested this bird is very flighty though and
will take off if approached by humans on foot. In saying this, we
first saw it about 2m from my car as we drove past however.
For those of you driving, just a couple of tips:
1. Take a scope for the best views
2. Take a friend to share the driving
Finally, this bird is really a great looking animal and an awesome
record for Australia. I would thoroughly recommend you try for it if
it is within your ability to do so.
Good luck!
Inger

>Hi All, I would like to request those birdo's who are travailing
to see this bird would consider others birdo's who may follow.
Reading the comments from some who have seen it ,it appears that
the bird is being flushed on two or three occasions. Trying to take
photo's necessitates getting close to the bird, there are photos of
this bird available so no need to take any more ,PLEASE BE MORE
CONSIDERATE FOR THE BIRD AND YOUR FELLOW BIRDO'S.
