This afternoon (12th June 2006), a few birdos including myself enjoyed
another good sea watch at Magic Pt in Maroubra, (approx. 10 km south of
Sydney CBD) but in much calmer conditions than the previous day. Winds
were mainly light westerly to south-westerly in almost clear blue skies.

Unlike yesterday, not a single Great-winged Petrel was seen as a result
of the pleasant conditions but still very good numbers of sea birds were
encountered and many still reasonably close, particularly 3 species of
Albatross, hundreds of Fluttering Shearwater (only had a small handful
of these Shearwaters the previous day) and a few Prions (2 identified as
Fairy Prions).

A few Humpback Whales (6 or so) were also seen moving north in small
groups.

My list of sea birds and numbers for the 3 hours (13:30-16:30 pm) I was
at Magic Pt today included the following:

Fairy Penguin (heard calling)
Black-browed Albatross (50)
Yellow-nosed Albatross (25)
Shy Albatross (5)
Giant Petrel (1)
Fairy Prion (2)
Prions other (5)
Fluttering Shearwater (500 plus)
Australasian Gannet (300)
Kelp Gull (3-4)
Silver Gull (200)
Crested Tern (60)

David Mitford and Stuart Pickering were also sea watching again at Magic
Pt Maroubra this morning and also had good numbers of birds including 5
Wandering and 23 Shy Albatross, several Giant Petrels, 4 Brown Skuas, a
few more Prions etc.
