Hi Birders,
Set out below is a letter from Drew Morris, seeking information from
birdwatchers who have previously birded around Birdsville Qld.

My name is Drew Morris and I’m the Tourism Information Officer in Birdsville
(part of the 95,000 sq kilometre Diamantina Shire in South West Queensland’s
Channel Country).

I’m currently looking into producing a brochure highlighting the birding
assets of the Diamantina Shire. We do get a lot of birdwatchers travelling
through, due to our location and some of the unique species and habitats we
possess, but at the moment I don’t think this market is really being catered
to. We’ve got a pretty amazing place out here, and I really want to work on
increasing the profile of the Channel Country as a birdwatching ‘must do’.

Unfortunately my own birdwatching skills are still somewhat amateurish and
out here I don’t really have a local bird club who I can approach for some
help and support. On top of this, due to the Shire’s immense size, I still
haven’t had a chance myself to search all of its corners in my relatively
short tenure here.

To overcome this significant constraint and because I want to produce
something useful as opposed to a token generic tourism brochure, I thought I’d
go straight to the heart and contact those who have travelled through here.

I was therefore wondering if any readers of Birding-aus would be willing to
pass on any ‘trip reports’ they may have compiled from previous trips
through Australia’s Channel Country. Through this I might be able to get a
better idea of where, when and why birdwatchers are travelling through our
shire (while finding out a few new spots I need to check out myself!).

So if anybody does have any trip reports, lists or general anecdotes that
they’d like to pass on, or even thoughts or comments on the projects I can
be contacted on the details above.

And if anybody is thinking of heading out here, please drop into the
Wirrarri Information Centre and say hello when you pass through.

Thanks very much and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Drew Morris.
