From Desley Williams, Mackay, Queensland
I would like to record an interesting sighting at Kinchant Dam today:
Date of Sighting: 28 April 11am
Observers: Desley Williams and Margaret Hope
Site: Kinchant Dam, 40k west of Mackay 70% full after recent
rain
Species: Great Crested Grebe 450 to 500; counted with binoculars
Comments: I have been visiting Kinchant Dam for the past 10 years
and have never seen large numbers before, in fact I recall seeing 30
nesting several years ago. The last visit in April 2004, I saw
TWO. The field guides class this species as rare to uncommon.
I usually see quite a few Little Australian Grebe, but today only
recorded one pair nesting at the resort side of the dam. There were
also 14 Great Crested Grebe at the resort side. I have
contacted other birders in the Mackay area to get a volunteer to count
them with a scope, also record GPS; I could have missed some using the
binoculars. Margaret agrees that there were 100s. Is it unusual
to see such large numbers? At 7am there were also hundreds and
hundreds of Fairy Martins catching insects.
Regards Desley Williams
