The photos are of Double-banded Plovers in winter plumage. Their numbers are building up along the coast as they migrate here from New Zealand at this time of the year. Banding studies have shown that about one third of the population migrate to Australian, mostly birds from the South Island. They depart again in August, by then most of them have changed to their summer breeding plumage. Check the field guides for details.
