Thanks for all the contributions. One thing I've noticed though in trying to identify it is the variations of the books on Ausatralian birds. I used my own copy of Morcombe's book, where the picture of the juvenile hooded plover looks identical. However, as a librarian at the State Library, when i checked in our large collection of bird books, I soon realized it obviously wasn't (apart from its range and rarity). What is generally considered the most accurate work?
