Hi Dick,
The pager system in the UK and Europe is well known, (is there
one in North America?)and perhaps if enough Australian birders become
involved we could support such a system here. BUT, at present, the logistics
and numbers in Australia are quite different. How many subscribers make a
paging system viable? The UK has two paging systems for twitchers, but is
said to have a million birders.
Mobile phone messages/texting might be an option, but
presumably too expensive.
Most serious birders do have computers though, and
notification by email would be the next best thing, particularly as the
messages are essentially free.
A contact phone number manned by an enthusiast (like Tony who
never goes out) for people who don't have immediate (or any ) access to a
computer would cover phone calls from say the Canning Stock Route (satphone)
and entered onto the Birdpedia site for instantaneous transmission to
recipients.
What do you think?
Cheers
Michael
