Rohan Clarke,
Chris Lester, Pater Marsh, Jann and Ross Mulholland, Grant Penrhyn, Lorand
Szucs, David and Glen Taylor, Bill Wakefield.

VESSEL/SKIPPER: Pauletta / John Males with deckie, Dale.

WEATHER: Initially, overcast, very cool to cold with a SW wind
of 15 knots.
In the afternoon, the weather cleared up with a S wind of 10 knots.

SEA: Initially, 0.5 m sea with no swell increasing
briefly to 1
m and then decreasing to 0.5 m of chop with no swell.

ACTIVITY: Sailed 07.15 from Pirates Bay (PB) at Eaglehawk Neck.
Headed out ESE past
the Hippolytes and diverted to a trawler about 12nm from PB and 3nm inside
the shelf at 08.30 at 43o 04.62'S 148o 09.44'E in 62 fathoms with water
temperature at 17.8o C until 08.45. Continued out and made our second stop at
09.15 (at about
0.9 nm past the shelf) in 200 fathoms (17.9o C) at 43o 05.54'S 148o 12.05'E
until 10.20. Moved further out to the E (coordinates unknown) and stopped 3 nm
over the
shelf (about 16 nm from the PB) at 10.40 in 550 fathoms (18.1oC) until 11.15.
Moved further to the N to 42o 59.71'S 148o 17.11'E and stopped 400 m outside
the shelf (about 15 nm from the PB) at
11.50 in 130 fathoms (18.4oC) until 12.45. Our fifth and final stop was at
13.15 at 43o 00.64'S 148o 14.76'E about 400 m inside the shelf in 71 fathoms
(18.6oC). Started back at 13.30 and returned to Pirates Bay at 15.30.

MAMMALS: None identified.

BIRDS: While a fair day in terms of weather (as the cold front
forecast for Saturday night passed through quickly leaving only a choppy
sea, that was mostly irritating), it was a quiet for birds in terms of the
number of species. But there were two excellent birds with brief views of
a LITTLE SHEARWATER (a pale-faced bird indicating that it originated from
a tropical population rather than a subantactic one) at the second stop
and protracted views of BULLER'S SHEARWATERS at stops 2, 3 and 5. An
unusual sighting was the GREAT CORMORANT, which was with the other
seabirds at our first stop near the trawler.
