I have read about the drop in insect numbers as well (WRT sparrow numbers), but it seems since everyone stopped using flysray there are loads more spiders in my garden and about the place (presumably capitalising on increased insect numbers) than ever before.
 
As far as predators, I don't know about collared sparrowhawks in Canberra,  how often are they seen in Sydney?

G'day all,
 
A year or so the number of sparrows in my territory seriously declined but
about 6 months ago the numbers returned to the more recent normal
 
They arrived here 1966
