The NZ functional equivalent is called Bush Lawyer - "it won't let you go until it has bled you dry."

The name of the palm/creeper is Lawyer Cane, ther are several species: Wait a While, Fish Tailed Lawyer Cane, Yellow Lawyer Cane, another one called Wait a While and Vicious Hairy Mary, they are all Calamus species. I like the old north Qld. name: Come back Quick.
