Your bird may simply have decided it was time for it to be eaten:

"The Indian chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar chukar) is the most
suitable species of partridge for commercial production. There is a
steady demand for them from the restaurant trade in Melbourne, but they
have an unstable fertility rate and susceptibility to temperature change
which makes them difficult to produce."
