Birds Australia has just been awarded a grant to appoint me to manage the Important Bird Areas (IBA) process in Australia for the next 3 years. So far, Stephen Garnett and the Birds Australia regional groups have identified most of the IBAs in north Queensland and have started in the rest of Qld, NSW, Vic and WA. I'll be helping these groups (and other regional bird groups) to identify the rest of the IBAs in their regions, to publish this data on the web and in a book, and then to monitor birds and start small conservation projects at these IBAs. I will be visiting the regional groups in the next few months and hope to meet all interested birders at these meetings. I'll advertise these trips in newsletters as soon as I organise the dates; anyone who can't make the meetings can email me.

thanks for your interest!

Guy

Thanks to everyones comments on my query re IBAs. I was just curious as to what was happening since I read about the 12 Northern Qld IBAs over a year ago on a website.

The Bird Interest Group of NSW and ACT, the birding clubs of NSW and ACT with BA etc, are into the 2 nd year of developing IBAs for NSW through Stephen Garnett and BA with a permanent position being funded to progress them in Australia over the next 2 years.  Any assistance in meeting the criteria of Birdlife International for an IBA would always be of assistance.
