Hello bird lovers... Lorne here...
A belated happy new year to one and all.
When in Leichhardt in Sydney's inner-west last week I thought I may
have seen a Pacific Swallow on a wire with ten Welcome Swallows. Not
sure though. I've seen a Pacific Swallow before; up at Newell Beach in
north Queensland. This Leichhardt bird looked remarkably similar with
its wingtips reaching the bottom of its tail, which was not considerably
forked. There were small white spots on the tail. I'm tentative to call
it a Pacific Swallow due to the rarity of these birds.
Does anyone out there know how immature Welcome Swallows differ from
adult Pacific Swallows? Do their wingtips trail to the end of their
tails, unlike the adult Welcome where the tail trails much further
beyond the wingtips?
If anyone can help me on this I'd be most happy.
