Isn't that characteristic of them? Also probably the most effective use of their camouflage.

Not that I know of. They often sit down with their legs underneath them and their neck flat on the ground (like in this photo from CanberraBirds - http://photogallery.canberrabirds.org.au/images/Stone-curlew_Bush2_Cook.jpg), but I've never seen one with the legs sticking off to the side.

Even for a 'Thicknee' the bird appears to have unusually inflamed legs below the kneecaps. Perhaps it is suffering from some sort of deformity and this is the most comfortable posture?

You could be right. I did notice it's "thick" thick-knees but I dismissed it at the time.

It made me think of the Gary Larsson cartoons (Sigh! I wish he?d come out of retirement!) featuring various animals and birds in what are typically human postures/situations before quickly reverting back to the norm when the humans appear on the scene.

That reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where the tribesmen see two guys approaching and yell out "Anthropologists!...Quick, hide the VCR" and race around concealing TV's, fridges, phones etc.
