Hi all,
Just back from a very pleasant week with the family down at Quarantine Bay,
Eden (s. NSW).
Some excellent birding as well, with Black-faced Monarch, Brown Gerygone,
Large-billed Scrubwren, White-headed Pigeon, Topknot Pigeon, Leaden
Flycatcher, White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Common Sandpiper, White-throated
Needletail, Satin Bowerbird, Rufous Fantail and Variegated Fairy-wren all
recorded within a short distance of our cabin.
Also caught up with Red-browed Treecreeper at nearby Mt Imlay.
The flock of WTNT was especially interesting. Weather was very warm,
overcast and humid with little wind. There were easily 200-300 birds all
³cruising² on a very slight breeze, fairly high up (around 150m). Virtually
all of the birds were gliding, with no wing-beats, moving very slowly in a
circular motions.
With my past encounters with WTNT they have been feeding, with extremely
fast flying and swooping, sometimes quite close to the ground/treetops.
This gliding behaviour is obviously energy-saving when the birds are not
feeding. Quite a sight at one time the whole sky was thickly dotted with
swifts seemingly ³hanging² in the air,
Cheers,
Greg
