Hi all, took a day off work yesterday to take
advantage of a long week end and went up to Capertee for the day (about 3hours
drive NW of Sydney). The weather was not ideal with temperatures in the high
30's, but nevertheless (and as usual) had some terrific birding particularly
later in the afternoon as the temperature started to drop, here are the
highlights: In general there were good number of Scarlet, White Plumbed,
and Fuscous Honeyeaters seen as various locations, particularly
White-plumbed seemed to be everywhere, also very good numbers of Red
Rumped Parrots. A good number of finches were seen including
Diamond Firetail, Zebra Finch, and Double-Barred
Flinches, unfortunately didn't see Plumb-Headed on this visit. Just
north of Glen Alice along the road saw a single Southern
Whiteface as well as a Brown Falcon. At Glen Alice
whilst having lunch we were joined by a group of White-Browed
Babblers as well as a very tame Jacky Winter,
also quite a few Dusky Woodswallows were flying over
head. Crown Station Road was simply alive with birds, found myself not knowing
where to look! At one point found area with no less that 5 Brown
Treecreepers feeding - almost seemed to be behaving like Babblers, also
along this road the star of the day with excellent close up views were 2
Turquoise Parrots (male and female). Also along this
road... a female White Winged Triller,
Restless Flycatcher, Striped Honeyeater,
Black-Chinned Honeyeater, lots and lots of Striated
Pardalote including many young bird, and also a number of
Little Lorikeet.
All in all an excellent days birding with 59
species seen despite the hot conditions.
Cheers
Simon.
