Now its my turn to fall on my sword. As I was in South America for the major
part of the spring breeding season I did not monitor the little eagle nest
site, although I noted that the nest had been significantly enlarged. When I
saw three eagles circling it on my return, albeit briefly before they went
out of view, I assumed, it appears incorrectly, that he third bird was a
recently fledged chick. In any event they were not chasing one another so it
appeared they were "a family".
All good stuff. Now, does anyone know whether the relocated bazas had any
breeding success?
On another matter, there should soon be a noticable reduction in the
sulphur-crested cockatoo numbers. A family of four powerful owls is feeding
on them almost exclusively. An analysis of boluses failed to find any other
recent prey item. On the subject of owls, I have been assisting pygmy possum
researchers and they have analysed 157 seperate prey items from sooty owl
boluses from five roost sites. Nine different prey mammals have been
identified including eastern pygmy possum, with two - swamp rat and
feathertail glider being he first records as sooty owl prey in Royal.
