4 Painted Snipe have been on swampland near Rutherglen for the past week now.
The wetland is on
the Chiltern road, 5km south east of Rutherglen. The birds are easily observed
in the early morning
and evening, but after a morning feed they casually walk back over the paddock
to their sedge
patch where they spend the rest of the day.
Buff-banded Rail, Australian Crake, Baillon's Crake, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and
a lone Wood
Sandpiper are all about and can generally be observed without too much effort,
although a scope
does make life a bit easier.
Over 100 Fork-tailed Swift went through yesterday morning, hawking low for the
insects over the
wetland. They weren't around this morning, but may still be in the area.
A nearby property is also attracting good birds. Although the water is
receding, the flooded crop has
has brought in 12 Magpie Geese. These have been their for three weeks now, an
unusual record for
this part of the world.
