Hi Birders,
There has been some interest recently in the fact that a White-eared Monarch
has been present for the last two summers in the Fig Tree Camp Crowdy Bay
National Park, just north of Harrington NSW. This location is well south of
the previously known southern limit of Woolgoolga and Iluka. The Crowdy Bay
bird was previously seen at the same place 27-30 September 1993 as well.
On 21 January 2006, Tim Morris had been using his binoculars to watch a Grey
Goshawk that was close to his house and he noticed a small bird among the
Lilli Pillis (Acmena smithii) and Guioa (Guioa semiglauca) in his front
garden. It was black and white and he assumed that it was a White-cheeked
Honeyeaters, a common garden bird at Crescent Head. He put the binoculars on
the bird and found that it was in fact a full plumaged White-eared Monarch.
His property is opposite some bushland and remnant rainforest that leads
down to Back Beach, Crecent Head.

In view of these repeated observations soputh of known range, the question
arises as to whether the White-eared Monarch is extending its range
southwards.
