Colin, I believe you touched on a very good discussion point, however in no
way do I wish to make any comments on the original debate about the pelagics
observed, just the importance of confirmed records and implications of this.
I also make the point that personal records do not matter but once in the
public forum ensure they are correct or a caveat such as "Tentative
identification" is attached.
The recording of rare species can have many implications beyond just
holidays and in the scheme of things holidays really are irrelevant, besides
I have little sympathy for those who can afford holidays just to chase one
species. (I am jealous)
The real issues are in terms of science conservation and the resources spent
if a species if incorrectly identified.
I know situations where a Recovery plan has been written on a species (a
Pseudomys species - or Pseudo -mouse) by the Department of Environment and
Conservation (NSW NPWS) when it was strongly believed that the species was a
misidentification. However the DEC had to prepare the plan (under
legislation) as it was a record on the database. The amount of time spent
would have equated to weeks, wouldn't this be better spent on research or
conservation?
As previously stated by Colin, in future this record may be used as an
indication of former range of the species from which it is now considered
extinct. I was never there!
I have personally had to survey for Sooty Owls in habitats that were not
appropriate for the species due to a record on the NPWS database that i am
led to believe was an escaped bird (which was in care) in the main street of
Byron. It took years before this record was deleted from the database. I
would have preferred to be spending more time in the field investigating
some of the other Threatened species on the site.
