Ibis with elongated toenail

Hi,
 
I was watching an Australian White Ibis feeding on the footpath across the road this morning and I noticed a feature I thought was rather unusual. It appeared that the toenail on the middle of it's three forward facing toes was grossly elongated and curved upwards. Here are some photos:
 
 
Not something I've seen in wild birds before.
