Subject: Red-necked Phalarope @ Seaford, Vic.
Hi all,
the red-necked phalarope reported earlier today at Seaford Swamp, 35 km
SE of Melbourne CBD, was still there at 18:25 h EDST. Apparently it had
been hard to find, perhaps because of a blustery change passing through
early afternoon. Two people have reportedly dipped since Mike Carter's
visit.
I found the bird in the north-eastern part of the swamp. It would be
most easily accessed from the east side, parking at the end of
Armstrongs Road off Wells Rd, then walking due west to the waters' edge
across Juncus acutus (sharp rushes) then walking north along the eastern
edge of the wetland, scanning all open areas of water, especially
nearshore areas. Be prepared to get your feet wet even if wearing
gumboots, water depth was around 20-25 cm in the lagoon. The bird spent
a short time preening at the end of my visit, but most time it was
swimming, characteristically actively.
Also present, 1 Aust. Spotted Crake and 1 Common Greenshank, both not
seen earlier by Sean and Andrew.
Cheerio. Peter.
