Hello Colin and Edwin,

Technically the Colliery Dam at Richmondvale is not accessible without permission either. I suspect that you are both talking about the same dam.

The Hunter Bird Observers Club used to have regular outings to this dam but were told that visiting rights had been rescinded a few years ago by the owner at the time. It was all to do with a planned housing development. We think that the current owners are different but permission to visit for the club has still not been granted. Having said that I am told that local residents walk through the land and around the dam all the time.

Cheers

Mick

Edwin,

No, wrong dam! This one is not accessible without permission. The sun was against me from where I could see the birds however they
definitely weren't Musk Duck as I could pick out the darker head and
chestnut body on the male.

Presumably this is the Colliery Dam at Richmondvale judging by your
directions provided. I've had Musk Ducks there before so could that have
been what you may have seen!
On another note about the dam, it looks like the Comb-crested Jacana's have
not returned there since the drought. Before the drought (which we are still
in), they were a previously breeding residents (young chicks were frequently
seen there) where about 12 birds (I have seen a maximum of 15 at one time)
was not an unusual sight at this location.

This drought has certainly affected many birds populations around southern
Australia!

Hi

On Thursday at a large colliery dam in the Black Hill region about 5k west
of the northern end of the F3 freeway:
Hoary-headed Grebe
Australian Grebe
Black Swans with large family
Hardheads
Black-fronted Dotterel
Black Duck
And what might have been a pair of Blue-billed Ducks. These birds were
perched on a log at the edge of the dam and at first I assumed they were
Chestnut Teal. However they just didn't look right (a bit dark) and the male
had a very distinct fan-shaped tail.

Cheers

Colin Driscoll
