Allan Gillander' s note reminds me that Little Friarbird was a new bird
for Black Mountain Road, Kuranda last week, feeding on a bottlebrush,
with Noisy Friarbirds nearby in a flowering Cadagi. Both are common in
the dry eucalypt savanna near Mareeba but seldom venture into the
rainforest blocks locally.
Red-necked Crakes are revving up for the breeding season, with much
dusk and early evening calling, whilst Lesser Sooty Owl made a great
appearance in our car park a couple of nights ago for one lucky group.
We expect the male Cassowary back sometime in the next couple of weeks,
hopefully with this years crop of youngsters- he raised 4 to
independence in 2004-05 which was very good. The young male who has ben
hanging around may be in for a shock when he returns, as he is very
aggressive with the chicks around and will surely drive him away again.
The big female " Missy" is in her 7 th year with us and comes most
days, and she will be tolerated even when he has young stripey chicks.
