A fine warm day with a light north wind in Melbourne today. As we walked around Warringal Swamp on the Yarra bank in Heidelberg this afternoon, we found a Tiger Snake, under the pines by the small pond at the south end. It rushed away and into the pond, swam to a clump of plants, found it was still too close to humans, and then swam across the pond towards the island, and settled in a clump of Water Ribbons close to the bank. Two Black Ducks swimming in the pond noticed it and followed close to its clump and stayed there, looking very alert. The snake was certainly 2'6" long, maybe 3 feet. Its stripes showed up beautifully as it crossed some bare ground.
 Mind where you walk!

We also noticed quite good numbers of Caper White Butterflies, blown in over the Ranges from the inland.

For those who want bird notes only, I heard a Fantail Cuckoo. First this spring, I think.
