An opportunity for work as a Ranger for a year in Griffith in south western
NSW has seen me return to the town I lived in for four years in the early
nineties. I have been back about a month and Spring has certainly started,
with the winter rain relieving the drought conditions of the previous few
years, and plenty of fresh growth.
So far I have visited Cocoparra NP a couple of times, travelled south to The
Rock (near Wagga Wagga) and Urana (I am back there tomorrow to also visit
Jerilderie) and east to Ingalba and Boginderra Hills near Temora. Spring
migrants include:
Pallid + Horsfield's Bronze Cuckoos, Rufous Songlark and Rufous Whistler in
Cocoparra in the last weekend of August.
White-winged Triller and Shining Bronze-cuckoo around Temora last week
Rainbow Bee-eaters, Shining Bronze-cuckoo, and lots more Songlarks and
Trillers in Cocoparra today.
I was told that Painted Honeyeaters were back in Binya SF on Monday, and I
went down and found at least two on the Whitton Stock Route in about 5
minutes today (along with my first Little Friarbirds).
There are also plenty of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers about.
No Sacred Kingfisher or White-browed Woodswallows yet, though they should be
about soon, and the Dollarbirds may be on the Murrumbidgee when I pass
through tomorrow.
I miss my annual Koel watch around Sydney, but I will be back down for some
survey work next week, and so should track down Octobedr migrants like
Black-faced Monarchs and Brush Cuckoos.
Cheers,
Peter
