First Dollarbird of the season at Abberton this-morning.
Channel-billed Cuckoo, Sacred Kingfisher, Leaden Flycatcher, White-winged
Triller, all here and very active; Rainbow Bee-eaters didn't really go away,
but they are now back in numbers. Much else is nesting here, Striated
Pardalote, White-throated Gerygone, Yellow Thornbill, Olive-backed Oriole,
Fairy Martins in their mud condominiums, Brown Quail seem to be exploding
in numbers and are a daily sight around the garden.
Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are here this-morning, checking out the White
Cedars, which are flowering, but not yet fruiting.
Around the lakes, Latham's Snipe, Greenshank, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers,
Red-capped Plovers, but surprisingly no Marsh Sandpiper yet.
A three-day weekend of birding produced 147spp.
Peregrine Falcon and Brown Falcon alongside each other here at Abberton the
other day, a wonderful contrast in jizz. Brown Goshawk and Collared
Sparrowhawk both here the same day. White-backed Swallow on Saturday.
Cotton Pygmy-geese and Red-necked Avocets were occasional at best in the
valley even four or five years ago, but both are dependable year-round and
breeding here these days.
Like every spring, it's an exciting and noisy time as more and more birds
turn up and announce themselves to each other. On a daily basis, it's an
uplifting experience to be around.
