No - it is almost impossible to get a reading under a canopy (and heavy cloud also) - you have to move to an area where there is clear sky above and then wait, usually a bit longer than usual, to pick up the satellites. Then you can move back quickly and hope to get a reading!

Further to Martin O'Brien's posting as below, please may I request that respondents answer one additional question:

    11.     Have you successfully used your GPS instrument from
    beneath the closed canopy of a rainforest?


There are a number of interesting bird species that favour rainforest as preferred habitat.
