        My  Magellan  also only lasted a year.

        I fire up the current Garmin (can't remember the model)  every few
months and it never misses a beat.  Position, speed, altitude and direction
home at the press of a button(s).

         Its supposed to be waterproof too, relevant for super-humid
situations.

          A built-in sat-phone and 6mp video/still camera/binos and music
(birdcall) player/recorder would make it ideal.
