Thanks to all who responded to my query on New Caledonia.
In summary it seems there are two ways to get to the best birding area in Riviere Bleue. 1. Use Arc-en-Ciel. They provide a 4wd and guide, which is horribly expensive, but gives you the best chance of seeing the endemics. 2. Park your car at the bridge and walk to the best areas for the endemics - about 5km to the start of the good habitat. We'll be walking in (can't afford the $150+ each price from Arc en Ciel) for a couple of days.
I'll post a trip report when I return.
Thanks, Dave
