Hi Birding-aussers, Hummingbird Hawk Moths were a common sight early summer to autumn on the Isle of Portland in Southern England, where I grew up. Their favourite plant visited was Valerian which is a Mediteranean flower, preferring limestone. The moth indeed emits quite a loud 'humming' noise but as Hawk Moths go is very much on the small side - combined with 'jizz' I can't imagine it being mistaken for a Hummingbird, which only occur in the Americas. Cheers - Paul W.
