Twenty enthusiastic birders rolled up to the visitor centre carpark at Point
Nepean last Sunday for a walk in the late winter sun. Although slightly windy,
the day was quite warm and pleasant. We walked from the visitor's centre to
Gunner's Cottage (about 3 km), getting great views of Grey Fantail and Golden
Whistler on the way. We had lunch at the small picnic ground near Observatory
Point as that provided plenty of benches upon which to sit. After lunch we
checked out the beach at Observatory Point and managed to spot about 6 Little
Penguins fishing amongst the waves. Australasian Gannets were flying past
towards The Heads. The group then walked along Coles Track to the beach at The
Bend where Pacific Gulls were seen on the rocks. Up the hill, across the road
and up Cheviot Hill to see a pair of Sooty Oystercatchers and a White-faced
Heron feeding on the rock platforms of Cheviot Beach. We then continued along
the road right to the point where Great, Pied and Black-faced Cormorants were
seen. Singing and Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters were seen at several locations
along the road and we had five species of raptor (Black-shouldered Kite, Brown
Goshawk, Brown Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, Nankeen Kestrel). A total of 48
species were recorded and the full list is below.
