Hi all,
I have been spending some time in Woodlands Historic Park near Melbourne
airport lately, doing some fieldwork for my honours project on mixed-species
feeding flocks (thanks Richard Nowotny for the suggestion). Firstly, if you
live nearby and haven't been here yet it is well worth the trip. Currently the
place is full of Flame Robins (up to 12 at once), as well as having Red-capped
Robins, lots of Sittellas, and some raptors in pre-breeding activity (Whistling
Kite and Peregrine Falcon to name a couple). But the highlight so far has been
Western Gerygone. I have seen or heard them in the 'Back Paddock' section
every time I've visited, and had great views yesterday. They (at least two
I've seen) are flitting about gleaning and hovering in the regrowth saplings
through the middle of the 'Back Paddock'. Quite a nice find! I also saw a
Rufous Whistler there yesterday. A couple of weeks ago I checked out the park
at Somerton Rd area, and also found Crested Shrike-tit and possibly Black-eared
Cuckoo (no sighting, and couldn't hear it well). The park is very easy to walk
around, and yesterday I got 33 species in 3 hours of looking.
Cheers, Dean.
