Hi all,
This posting is a request for information when an Orange-bellied Parrot is
sighted (or what may be an OBP). It is important that the information on the
sighting is lodged with Birds Australia as soon as possible on one of the
survey forms. These forms, along with other information on OBP?s, can be found
on the Birds Australia website (http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au) under ?about
birds?. When recording a sighting it would be great if the following
information could be obtained:
1. Location of the sighting (GPS is a bonus)
2. Sex and age of birds seen (e.g. juvenile male, adult female, etc)
3. What the birds were doing (i.e. feeding, loafing, etc). If feeding, ID of
plant would be awesome
4. Band information. This is the best, and most crucial, observation if it can
be obtained (usually requires a scope to read them, but binos can see them).
The key things to look for with the bands are as follows. One leg (generally
the left) will have a powder coated or natural (silver) stainless-steel band on
it ? the colour indicates the year the bird hatched. The other leg (generally
the right) will have a coloured band with a letter repeated on it two or three
times (e.g. black band with a white ?X?). This combination is unique for each
bird and provides an insight into the movements of individuals.
If you can?t read a band, or are unsure if the bird is an OBP or somethinig
else, still let us know about the sighting ASAP so that we can get someone with
a scope to check out the report. A big thanks to all volunteers and birders
who report sightings to us, or have in the past, and thank you all for your
help in this matter. Without this volunteer input, groups like the recovery
team would have less information at their disposal for management decisions.
