Hello All,

I've updated my website (www.wildlifing.com) at last after a bit of a hiatus due to a new job.

This time I've added a small photo-essay describing an area of forest to the west of Lake Macquarie that I call the Awaba Forest. This area was proposed as a possible nature reserve as long ago as 1972. In 1995 an ecological assessment of the area confirmed its high conservation value. It also happens to be include some of my favoured birdwatching spots.

It consists mostly of open-forest with lots of Scribbly Gum and Smooth-barked Apple, including some wonderful old growth trees. There is some Blue Gum forest along Lord's Creek. Its a long time since its been logged- most of it is crown land and has suffered from some land subsidence due to underground coal mining. This has made it unsuitable for most development, however it has been earmarked as a future very large quarry.

Some of the special birds that occur here include Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, Southern Emuwren, Spotted Quailthrush, Painted Buttonquail Glossy Black-cockatoo, Powerful Owl and at least 2 pairs of Masked Owls. Also present are threatened mammals including Squirrel Gliders and the Tiger Quoll.

Anyway, I've put a few photos on the site and I'll keep improving it with more photos and info as I increase my Awaba photo collection.

Cheers

Mick
