"There are also several Aust. Hobbies inhabiting the area around Alma Road, St Kilda (where I work). I often see them flying low and fast over rooftops, presumably hunting for unsuspecting pigeons (which are in plague proportions around here!),"

A bit south in Melbourne our records suggest most prey is smaller than pigeons although there are a couple of records of them going after Spotted Turtle-doves and, once, a Feral Pigeon. Also a possible Hobby with Dove prey.

Most common identified victims are starlings and blackbirds, with records of White-plumed Honeyeater and House Sparrow too. Also Myna?, Grey fantail?, Noisy Miner? plus probable mice a couple of time and also insects. (There's a nice article in the recent Braeside Park Friends newsletter about a Hobby taking dragonflies.)

I've seen them chasing after some further species: Skylark, Cuckoo-shrike, Rainbow and Scaly-breasted Lorikeets. Also Corellas under attack, but that might have been one of their reactions to larger birds as other raptors, herons and possibly Pelicans have been chased.
