hi Folks,
Stopped at Half moon Bay Golf Course pond at Yorkey's Knob just north
of Cairns as we returned from PNG on June 1, and found a male and two
female plumaged Plum-headed Finch in with a flock of about 60
Chestnut-breasted and Nutmeg Mannikins, feeding on newly mown grass
opposite the sports club adjacent to the pond. This is my first local
area record, though I have seen them at Georgetown some 4 hours drive
west. Also 4 Radjah Shelduck on the island on the pond, a tick for many
of my group and scarce locally.
June 2 saw us see about 20 White-browed and 4+ Masked Wood-swallows
still around the flowering gums at marker post 175 just beyond Koah
servo on the Mareeba Road, where they have been since late April.
Clearly a few odd species around this year, let's hope for more.
Good birding
Phil Gregory
