We found numerous Rufous-crowned Emu-wrens at Cape Range about three years ago,
and also Painted Finches.
The wrens were in low scrubby bush between the road and beach, south from
the entry gate to the area on the west side of Cape Range, ie south from a small
cottage about opposite the entry gate. They were invisible at first but
responded to standing still and "air-kissing". Eventually they were all over the
place and we got sick of seeing them.
Painted Finches were up on the rise on the east side of the gorge which you
eventually reach by following that road south. They flew over the rocky hill to
the east. Also saw Little Button-quail up there, and local subspp. of Western
Bowerbird around the scattered figtrees all over that side of the
range..
Shothole Canyon very early in the morning was a bonanza, even got Grey
Honeyeater, and Spinifexbirds. It took extreme patience, ie
standing still for twenty to thirty minutes . Hadn't been burned recently at
that time.
Cheers
Michael
