Mysterious Currawongs

In mid April, there was a flock of Pied Currawongs numbering at least 100
birds in Tench Reserve along the banks of the Nepean River at Penrith, just
to the west of Sydney and at the base of the Blue Mountains.

These birds were flying back and forth through the treetops calling all the
time making a lot of noise. They stayed in the reserve for about 3 days and
I have not seen them since, however I have seen this type of flocking in the
same place in the past. My thought was that these were probably birds from
the mountains moving down to suburbia for the winter.

On the other hand, a pair of pied currawongs have nested in a large gum
outside our house for at least the last two years, in 2003 they raised a CB
Cuckoo chick, and last year they had chicks in the nest which I was
observing through a scope, but one morning the nest was completely
destroyed. I do not know if this meant that the chicks had flown or that
some predator had taken them?
