The Long-tailed Cuckoo's host in New Zealand (Gerygone ignata) usually
successfully raises one brood prior to the cuckoos arrival from wintering on
the islands of the South Pacific and so only the second brood is at risk of
being parasitised. The system must work as it has been functioning for a long
time. The new Zealand bird starts breeding in August a month earlier than the
South African host.
