Hi Marian,
Thanks for the warning about bats but I am fully
aware of the potential for bats to be infected with lyssavirus and, as I handle
microbats in my work, have received the anti-rabies injections - weren't
they fun!
We have to be careful not to over-react to the
slight possibility of a particular bat being infected as there is a fair
amount of paranoia in the general community and this is totally
unwarranted. People working with bats are the most at risk and this is a
very small risk, but nevertheless should not be ignored. The general
public have very little chance of coming into contact with an infected
bat. Two people have died from lyssavirus
in Australia, none since the inoculations have been given. There are many
human borne diseases that kill many more people each year. We need to keep
it in perspective and not consider bats as disease- ridden vermin, as some
of my neighbours believe.
A little off birds but bats do have
wings!

Greg
