Earlier this week I received a phone message from Blue Mountains birder Mark Ley to say that he had been watching and photographing 15 Plumed Whistling-Ducks on a small dam at Woodford (in the mid Blue Mountains, west of Sydney), on Sunday 3/4/05. As far as I am aware, this is the first record of this species in the Blue Mountains, though they are regularly seen nearby in the Hawkesbury area, e.g. Pugh's Lagoon.

On Tuesday afternoon I managed to get down to Woodford to have a look, but unfortunately the ducks had gone. The dam is a little gem surrounded by bush and the birds were obviously stopping over while on their way somewhere else when Mark found them. Amazing what turns up in these places from time to time.

Cheers,
Carol
