I'd be prepared to wager a fair amount on these birds being Painted B-Quail. Habitat wasn't mentioned but Red-backed B-quail are (to my mind) more a wetter grassland bird and not frequently recorded in NSW and then generally the Northern Rivers/Mid North Coast area.
