The people who suggested using call playback to
census King Quail are on the right track. Whether playback is necessary
though can be debated. In the early 1980's Sandy Gilmore and I
carried out a survey of Ground Parrots in Yuraygir National Park, east of
Grafton, North Coast NSW. We censused by listening for calls on dusk as at
that time we didn't have the luxury of playback. We didn't hear one Ground
Parrot but at virtually all of the wet heath sites suitable for Ground Parrots,
we heard King Quail calling. So listening at dusk, with the optional use of
playback, would appear to be the best method. The breeding season is
poorly understood for this species, according to HANZAB, but presumably males
would call more frequently/reliably when breeding.
