Michael Todd asked about call playback and response by King Quail. I was born and bred in Wauchope on the NSW Mid-north Coast. I regularly had King Quail respond to my imitating their three note whistle, particularly in Crowdy Bay National Park where they were fairly common (I assume they still are). I was very accustomed to their call as I kept and bred various colour varieties of the domesticated King Quail (I still do). Whistling to captive birds also elicits a response from these birds.
