Hi,
I just found this in the sci.bio.entomology.misc newsgroup.
-----------
In case you think taxonomists take their work too seriously:
Miller and Wheeler (in Coleopterist Bulletin 58(4), 2004, pg 466) have named
a new genus of leiodid beetle, Gelae (pronounced "jelly").
new species placed in the genus:
Gelae donut (pronounced "doughnut")
Gelae rol (pronounced "roll")
Gelae belae (pronounced "belly")
Gelae fish (pronounced "fish")
Gelae baen (pronounced "bean")
The only excuse for the genus name is that these little beetles live on
slime molds which are jelly-like sometimes. The species epithets are just
for amusement apparently. The beetles are presumably celebrating their new
stature with a big slime mold party.
